Telangana’s $1 Trillion Promise: CM Revanth Reddy Urges PM Modi to Enhance Railways

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has set an ambitious target for the state, proposing to contribute USD 1 trillion towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a USD 5 trillion Indian economy. However, this contribution hinges on a significant boost to the state’s railway infrastructure and connectivity.

During the virtual inauguration of the Cherlapalli railway terminal on January 6, 2025, alongside other infrastructure projects in Jammu and Kashmir and Odisha, CM Revanth reminded PM Modi of several pending proposals crucial for Telangana’s economic growth.

Pending Metro Phase-II Proposal

Highlighting the need for improved urban connectivity, CM Revanth urged PM Modi to expedite the approval of Telangana’s Metro Phase-II project. Despite multiple reminders, the state’s proposal remains pending with the Union Cabinet, delaying much-needed urban mobility solutions for Hyderabad and its neighboring regions.

Key Infrastructure Requests from Telangana

The Chief Minister also presented a comprehensive list of railway infrastructure demands to enhance connectivity and spur economic development in the state. Key requests include:

Greenfield Highway with Railway Line:
A dedicated greenfield highway and railway line connecting Hyderabad with Bandar Port, crucial for facilitating trade and logistics.

Railway Line Along Regional Ring Road (RRR):
CM Revanth sought approval for a railway line running parallel to the RRR in Telangana, which could significantly enhance intra-state connectivity.

Vikarabad-Krishna Railway Line:
A proposed railway line between Vikarabad and Krishna to establish a direct link between Hyderabad and Karnataka, fostering regional economic integration.

Kazipet Railway Coach Factory:
Reiterating a long-pending demand, he requested the establishment of a railway coach factory in Kazipet, which promises to generate employment and boost the local economy.

Strategic Economic Vision

CM Revanth emphasized the importance of railway infrastructure in unlocking Telangana’s full economic potential. He noted that the state’s landlocked geography makes robust railway connectivity essential for trade, investment, and growth.

Telangana lacks port access, and improving the railway network is the only way to overcome this geographical limitation and ensure long-term economic prosperity,” he remarked.

South Korea’s Interest in Telangana

In a significant development, the Chief Minister revealed that South Korea is exploring investment opportunities in Telangana under its “China Plus One” strategy for manufacturing electric vehicles (EVs). The state’s strategic location and industrial policies make it an attractive destination for foreign investments.

To facilitate this, CM Revanth requested the Central Government to prioritize infrastructure upgrades that could support such investments, including seamless rail-road connectivity to industrial hubs and ports.

The terminal’s inauguration is a step in the right direction, but CM Revanth insists that more comprehensive planning and investment are required to fully unlock potential as a logistics hub.

Why Railways Are Crucial for Growth

Hyderabad strategic location in the heart of India positions it as a key player in the country’s economic growth. However, the state’s landlocked geography and lack of direct port access present challenges that only a robust railway infrastructure can overcome.

Key benefits of an enhanced railway network include:

Trade Facilitation: Faster and cheaper transportation of goods to ports and other states.

Job Creation: New projects like the Kazipet coach factory could create thousands of jobs.

Regional Integration: Improved connectivity with neighboring states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Foreign Investments: Attracting global players like South Korea with world-class infrastructure.

Commitment to PM Modi’s Vision

CM Revanth reiterated Telangana’s commitment to contributing USD 1 trillion to India’s economic vision, provided the Central Government extends its support. “With the right infrastructure investments, can lead the way in achieving PM Modi’s goal of a $5 trillion economy,” he asserted.

The Road Ahead

The demands put forth by CM Revanth are a reminder of the critical role states play in driving national growth. As India seeks to transform into a global economic powerhouse, cooperative federalism and collaborative infrastructure development will be key.

For Telangana, the next steps involve:

  • Expediting the approval of pending projects like Metro Phase-II.
  • Prioritizing railway line expansions and industrial connectivity.
  • Strengthening partnerships with foreign investors like South Korea.
