A man claiming ties to Telangana MLA’s office defrauded 83 people promising double bedroom homes. Gajularamaram police arrest accused as housing scams rise across Hyderabad and Telangana.
Telangana Double Bedroom Housing Scam Uncovered: 83 Victims Cheated in Hyderabad
In a shocking case that highlights the growing menace of real estate fraud in Telangana, a man posing as a former employee of a local MLA’s office has been arrested for allegedly duping 83 individuals of ₹1 lakh each under the pretense of securing them double-bedroom houses from the state government’s welfare housing scheme.
Arrest in Gajularamaram: ₹83 Lakh Scam Busted
The accused, Bommidisetty Haribabu, a resident of Reddynagar Colony in Quthbullapur, was arrested by Jeedimetla police after a complaint was filed by a local victim. Haribabu reportedly told his victims that he had previously worked in the office of Quthbullapur MLA KP Vivekanand and used this claim to gain their trust. He allegedly promised to secure double bedroom houses being constructed by the government in and around Hyderabad.
How the Fraud Worked
Haribabu convinced each victim to pay ₹1 lakh as a “processing commission” for house allocation. He collected a total of ₹83 lakh from 83 individuals using this modus operandi. One of the victims, Tailam Ramesh, paid the amount hoping to be included in the beneficiary list for the government housing scheme. When several months passed without any update or allocation, Ramesh realized he had been duped and lodged a complaint at the Jeedimetla Police Station.
Following the complaint, a case was registered on July 14, and the police swiftly identified and apprehended Haribabu. Another accomplice named Gaddam Sridhar was also arrested for his involvement in collecting money from the victims.
Fraudulent Use of Funds
Investigations revealed that Haribabu had used the defrauded money to build a house in Reddynagar Colony. According to victims, if this claim is verified, law enforcement may seize the property. ACP Naresh Reddy stated that action would be taken to recover the victims’ funds, including confiscating any assets acquired through the fraudulent money.
MLA Responds
Reacting to the arrest, Quthbullapur MLA KP Vivekanand issued a statement clarifying that Haribabu did indeed serve as a personal assistant in his office for nearly a decade. However, he emphasized that Haribabu was dismissed a year ago following internal concerns. The MLA distanced his office from the scam and urged the public to remain vigilant and report such frauds immediately.
A Larger Pattern of Housing Scams
This case sheds light on a larger issue across Telangana and rural Andhra Pradesh, where fraudulent agents and middlemen are exploiting government welfare schemes like Indiramma Housing and the Double Bedroom Scheme. While the Telangana government provides financial assistance up to ₹5 lakh for eligible poor families to build homes, several unqualified individuals have applied using fake documents, facilitated by agents charging illegal commissions.
With distribution of government-constructed homes still pending in several areas, fraudsters are capitalizing on delays and public desperation by offering backdoor deals. In some rural villages, even those without eligibility have been tricked into paying hefty sums under the false promise of housing allotments.
Public Advisory
Authorities are urging citizens to approach authorized government channels only and avoid paying any money to unauthorized individuals. Housing allotments are processed free of cost and based on eligibility criteria established by the state housing department.
This incident is a stern reminder that vigilance and verification are crucial when dealing with public welfare schemes. Anyone suspecting fraudulent activity is encouraged to report immediately to local law enforcement.
